Eric Sutherns, Bridge Master at Tower Bridge (which is owned and
managed by the City of London Corporation), has received an MBE for
services to the City of London. In a ceremony at Buckingham
Palace on February 8th, he received the honour from the Prince of
Wales in recognition of his 23 years of service at Tower
Bridge.
Following a career in the Navy, Eric Sutherns joined the City
Corporation in 1988 as a technician. He has since held a number of
positions, including Operations Manager and Project Co-ordinator,
being instrumental in developing the Exhibition within the Bridge.
He was appointed Bridge Master in 2008 in recognition of his
knowledge, experience and standing in the Pool of London and is
currently overseeing the renovation of Tower Bridge.
“I am proud and deeply honoured” said the Bridge Master, “this
is a great moment that I will treasure for the rest of my life”
The Bridge Master had previously met Prince Charles in 1994,
when the Prince of Wales visited the Bridge to mark its centenary
year and the re-launch of the exhibition. Last year the
Bridge Master along with all Tower Bridge staff met the Queen when
she visited Tower Bridge as part of her royal visits.
