New Exhibition - 'This is London’: Tower Bridge
Brings Classic Children’s Book to Life
26 March 2013
We are delighted to present ‘This is
London’, a fabulous, family-friendly exhibition
featuring the internationally acclaimed illustrations and playful
prose from Miroslav Sasek’s classic children’s book. First
published in 1959, Sasek’s charming, child’s-eye view of London’s
sights, buildings and people form an affectionate portrait of the
city which has enchanted generations of children and adults.
Held in the West Walkway from 29 March 2013, this special
exhibition sees us partner with the Sasek Estate and Rizzoli
International Publications to bring the world-famous book to life
across 29 large-scale (117cm x 82cm) displays. The printed
reproductions of Sasek’s jaunty artwork are complemented by
information about London today, allowing these charming and
evocative images to be your guide and see how much (or how little)
London has changed since the 1950s.
All set against the backdrop of the incredible views of the city
from Tower Bridge’s high-level Walkways, a number of famous
landmarks featured in the book can also be seen from the exhibition
space, such as St. Paul’s Cathedral and The Monument, and, of
course, Tower Bridge itself.
If after admiring M.Sasek’s illustrations you develop a penchant
for taking crayon to canvas, adults and children alike can create
their own masterpieces using the colouring sheets provided inside
the exhibition. In fact, send us pictures of your artwork and we
will happily post it on Facebook!
‘This is London’ is internationally
accessible with all additional panel information available in
French, German, Spanish and Italian.
It will accompany the hugely popular “Great Bridges of the World
Exhibition” currently on display in the East Walkway
and featuring over 20 Bridges, each of which represents a
breathtaking feat of engineering. Entry to both exhibitions is
included in the
