Tower Bridge Exhibition is stepping back in time to 1878
‘Britain’s finest engineering talents have been invited to submit their designs. And most ingenious they are! A rolling bridge, a duplex bridge, a spiral roadway to ease the approaches ‘ (Text taken from Tower Bridge Exhibition Show)
In 1876 Parliament invited engineers to propose designs for a new bridge, a bridge that was to become internationally recognised. The new crossing was desperately needed as more and more people were moving into the East of the City. The building of this Bridge caused a controversy.
‘A new road bridge? It’ll be the ruin of us all! You go cutting the port in half and the food will be rotting in the ships holds, and then where will London be?’ (Text taken from Tower Bridge Exhibition Show)
During October half term Tower Bridge Exhibition will be going back in time to witness the discussions and debates that took place when deciding on which design to choose for the new Bridge. Visitors will even get the opportunity to meet Horace Jones, the man who designed the Bridge we know today!
Costumed actors will be performing 4 shows a day and also roaming around talking to visitors about the history of the Bridge, the need for it in the late 19th Century and what life was like in Victorian times. These exciting shows will be suitable for both Adults and Children and will take place at 10.30am, 12.30pm, 2.00pm and 3.45pm; characters will also be around the Exhibition all day.
This experience is included in the normal entrance price to Tower Bridge Exhibition. £5.50 for adults, £4.25 for students and seniors and £3.00 for children, under 5’s go free.
