New Discoveries with Tower Bridge’s NEW Formal Learning Programme
From 1st September 2014, schools are invited to step inside the most famous bridge in the world, and enhance their learning through new interactive workshops that explore the history and engineering of this iconic structure and its environment.
Building on our current schools offering, the new learning programme, which is supported by a new dedicated facility, the Bridge Master’s Learning Centre, offers three FREE cross-curricular workshops at no additional cost:
• Local history and geography - Students will explore the growth of the local area (Pool of London – Southwark and Tower Hamlets), investigating the link between the river and the businesses and communities that developed around it and using historical sources to discover why the bridge was built.
• STEM - This hands-on workshop examines the processes involved in opening the Bridge, from Victorian steam engineering to modern day electronics, demonstrating the progression of techniques and technology over the last 120 years. Students will build a model of Tower Bridge and code a computer programme that raises the Bridge’s bascules, offering a glimpse into the workings of this engineering marvel.
• Bridges - Using Tower Bridge Exhibition’s impressive high-level Walkways and magnificent Engine Rooms, the learning team will lead activities to tell the Bridge’s story, in engaging and interactive ways.
Working with local teachers, the programme aligns with the national curriculum and is aimed at Key Stage 2 pupils, but can be adapted to younger or older children.
The workshops are led by our experienced learning and community engagement team, and take place every week accommodating up to 30 children per session. These must be booked a minimum of two weeks in advance and are included at the normal school visit rate – and remember to take advantage of our special offer: UK primary schools are entitled to 1 adult free with every 10 children.
Book a workshop today by contacting our Learning and Community Engagement team on +44 (0) 20 7940 8397 or via email firstname.lastname@example.org.
The workshops’ launch will also pave the way for an enhanced learning programme at Tower Bridge that will extend beyond schools to increase engagement with families and community groups.
