Totally Thames Festival returns to the Bascule Chambers in 2019
For 2019’s Totally Thames Festival, Composer-curator Iain Chambers returns to fill Tower Bridge’s atmospheric subterranean Victorian spaces of the Bascule Chambers with a brand-new programme of performances.
The world-renowned new music ensemble Apartment House will be performing with vocalist Elaine Mitchener, fresh from her acclaimed Jeanne Lee Project. Together they’ll give the European premiere of Charles Mingus’s String Quartet No. 1 – never heard anywhere since its first performance in New York in 1972.
There will also be performances by Fluxus artist Ben Patterson and a new Alex Ho commission performed by Fiona Foo Pui-Yee, as well as new music from composers Julius Aglinskas, Iain Chambers and Egidija Medekšaitė.
And to top it off, Birdspeed will perform a new poetry commission, which explores the black Tudors, using the Thames as a starting point and repositioning black history into stories it's been excluded from.
Upgrade your experienceOn selected dates art historian Dan Cruickshank will give an exclusive talk about the architecture and surrounding history of Tower Bridge prior to the concert. Or, choose a Personal Guided Tour and take an extended look around Tower Bridge: from its iconic Towers, high-level Walkways and Victorian Engine Rooms down to its hidden depths, normally out of bounds to the public.
