Photography was in its infancy during Victorian times. You can see some photos of the public opening day at Tower Bridge in 1894 in our exhibition, Launching a Landmark: The Unseen Opening Weeks, but these photos are rare and there’s no film footage of the event. Can you help to recreate the scene and record it for posterity? Use our ipads and stop frame animation app to create a short film using Victorian characters.
All participating families will receive a Family Activities Pass, entitling you to free entry on any Family Activities Day in the next six months.
Launching A Landmark: Flat Caps and Bowler Hats
Tue 6, Sat 10 and Tue 13 August 2024
In Victorian times when Tower Bridge was built, you were never properly dressed without a hat. You can see photos of many people with their hats in our exhibition, Launching a Landmark: The Unseen Opening Weeks. Discover the significance behind the different types of hats workers at Tower Bridge wore then try some on for yourself by selecting some headgear from our handling collection. Next, make your own hat ‘props’ to take away with you and ‘wear’ on your journey around the Bridge – perfect for photos to remember your day out.
Launching A Landmark: Snapshots in Time
Tue 20 and Tue 27 August 2024
Our Launching a Landmark: The Unseen Opening Weeks exhibition shows rare moments from history. Families are invited to make their own snapshots in time during their visits to Tower Bridge. Decorate a Victorian portrait frame at our family drop-in sessions, cut it out then take it with you on your journey round the Bridge and Engine Rooms. Take photos of family members inside the frame against the Bridge’s stunning backdrops – a great way to capture your own special moments in time.
